Reimagining Public Spaces After COVID-19 | Celia Lee | TEDxYYC [Video]

Our public spaces can and should improve health and equity in our City – while developing our economy. Let’s rethink our assumptions about who and what our public spaces are for. The way we build our cities affects our health, happiness and our pocketbooks. Affecting policy may be the most effective way to change the way we build public space on a large scale. However, grassroots projects can have a lot of local impact while developing public interest – thereby increasing political will for larger-scale change. Here is some more imagery of what change could look like: http://www.sustainablecalgary.org/the-blog/2021/9/26/reimagining-public-space Celia specializes in research and programming on topics ranging from poverty to social economy, material culture, environmental economics, environmental design and sustainability. She is Executive Director of Sustainable Calgary, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting community-led action towards sustainability – as measured by 40 indicators in its State of our City reports. Recent programming has been dedicated to “co-designing” healthy neighbourhoods and informing policy on active travel, health and equity in city design. Celia has co-authored works such as Reimagine Catwalks Playbook: Policy Companion (2021), 2020 Poverty Snapshot in Calgary, Becoming A City for Everyone: 2019 Ottawa Hunger Report, The Cost of Poverty in Ontario (2019), Healthy Places: Designing for Health in Alberta (2018), and Poverty Costs (Alberta, 2012). As a trained mezzo-soprano, Celia can be found singing with local groups such as Luminous Voices, Early Music Voices and the Rosa Baroca orchestra. In her spare time she has been contemplating the merits of tree worship, reading, hiking, and listening to Buffy (St. Marie//the Vampire Slayer). What’s Up with Your Drinking Water? | Sarah Houston | TEDxMemphis [Video]

When was the last time you asked “What’s up with my drinking water?” Water is the foundation of life, yet few people can name the water source pouring from their faucets. She believes individuals become connected to their community and environment in a tangible way when they know the basic facts of their water source and the issues impacting it. Water warrior Sarah Houston has been pedaling a passion for holistic water management in the academic, corporate, and nonprofit sectors for over ten years. In 2016, Houston and her husband quit their jobs to adventure with a purpose. Through Wander Like Water, they used bicycle touring to connect YouTube viewers with water sources. The project caught on quickly and their audience spans over 50 countries with over a half million views. In 2021, Houston was hired as the first full-time Executive Director of Protect Our Aquifer and is pursuing a Master of Science in Earth Sciences from University of Memphis. The Science of Creativity | Alyssa Dominique Nucaro | TEDxMemphis [Video]

Traditionally, schools use very concrete pedagogies and approaches to teaching children, but we see this more than ever in low-income communities due to their classification as high-need areas. Teachers are pressured to have their students meet certain achievement scores that directly affect their value as an effective educator. This pressure to achieve has taken art, poetry, creative writing, and exploration out of curriculum, which creates less equitable experiences that hinder students in these areas. What makes data valid? A number? Or an actual experience allowed to be expressed in a way other than words? Alyssa Dominique Nucaro believes that educators need to shift the way they think about how students accumulate knowledge as a first step to changing the education system. Alyssa Dominique Nucaro is a ten-year public school educator in Memphis, TN. She is a proud PhD candidate at the University of Memphis and a 2019 recipient of the New Memphis Educator of Excellence Award. Outside of her time in education, she is an author, researcher, and poet. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Fail Safe: How Local Gov’t Can Succeed through Failure | Justin Entzminger | TEDxMemphis [Video]

We root for innovation and development everywhere but government. However, for government to be successful, we have to reboot our expectations and celebrate the small-scale failures that lead to better service and improved lives. When you believe you are required to never fail, it is natural to focus on doing the same thing, over and over, despite the world changing around you.Justin Entzminger advocates that the only way to increase trust in government is to have it be more responsive to residents. Additionally, the only way to be responsive is to build a system for experimentation and failure. Justin shares how his organization is failing forward by trying something new and learning from mistakes. Justin Entzminger is the Executive Director for Innovate Memphis, the non-profit innovation team for the City of Memphis. Under Justin’s leadership, Innovate Memphis also became the official Memphis partner with the National Neighborhood Indicators Partnership in early 2021. Before joining Innovate Memphis, Justin worked as a strategy consultant. He has a Bachelor of Art degree from Georgetown University and a Master degree in Business Administration from the Massey School of Business at Belmont University, where he focused on entrepreneurship. Good energy | Matthias Massling | TEDxVenlo [Video]

A new technique to stop heating our homes with gas. Think global and act local to preserve the earth for future generations. Mathias looks at the environment we live in, seeing opportunities at hand and combining design insights with science and technology. The Dutch have an unprecedented advantage in how to manage challenging water issues and threats. Can the Netherlands use its precarious relationship with water to stay afloat through the climate crisis and make the transition towards a low emission future at the same time? Design being a first indication of human intention, Matthias Massling as a design student at Fontys has always been intrigued by the man-made world we live in, searching for the answers to what, how and why things are as they are. Combined with his interest in science and technology now, as one of the youngest speakers at TEDxVenlo 2021, his appealing talk will advocate the need for action, helping to bring solutions to the scale of just a neighborhood in the City of Venlo.
