The Earthquakes took an early lead but could not hold on to win Saturday night in a 1-1 draw with the Colorado Rapids.
Javier Eduardo “Chofis” López took a pass from Cade Cowell, cut back to evade a defender a ripped a side-netter to give the Earthquakes a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute. The 17-year-old Cowell became the first player in MLS with at least four goals and four assists this season.
But the lead did not last much past halftime.
Colorado midfielder Cole Bassett, 19, ripped a left-footer from the top of the 18-yard box through traffic and into the net to cap the scoring in the 53rd minute.
San Jose (3-7-3, 12 points) is winless in its last nine games and has been outscored 18-5 over that span. The Earthquakes now sit at 11th in the Western Conference.
