Bill Brand is currently serving as the 30th Mayor of the City of Redondo Beach, having first won in March 2017, and re-elected for another four-year term as Mayor in 2021. Mayor Brand began his public service career in 2009 when he was first elected to the Redondo Beach City Council on a slow growth platform representing the waterfront district. He was successfully re-elected in 2013 for another 4 years as council member. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from California State University, Long Beach and a Master’s in Business Administration at USC, with a concentration in Finance. He worked as an engineer for Fluor Corporation in Irvine, CA and for American Airlines as a Crew Chief for over 40 years.Bill was diagnosed with Stage IV lung cancer in June, 2019, after suffering a seizure on a flight to Mexico. Cancer had already spread to his brain, back and lymph nodes. He considers himself lucky to have the love and support of his family, friends and community to successfully battle this disease. For the Love of Music | Tanya Gabrielian | TEDxBU [Video]

An unemotional take on a “creative” art. Hailed by the London Times as a “pianist of powerful physical and imaginative muscle,” Tanya shot onto the international stage at the age of twenty with back-to-back victories in the Scottish International Piano Competition and the Aram Khachaturyan International Piano Competition. Since then, she has performed on four continents in acclaimed venues including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., Sydney Opera House, Queen Elizabeth Hall and Wigmore Hall in London, and the Salle Cortot in Paris, with such orchestras as the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Boston Pops, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, and London Sinfonia. Tanya’s Southbank debut recital in the Purcell Room in London, presented by the Philharmonia Orchestra, was chosen as “Performance of the Year” by Seen and Heard International. Her latest album, Remix: Bach Transcriptions, was selected as Album of the Week by radio stations in Chicago, Boston, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Determination as the secret ingredient of success | Ani Aprahamian | TEDxYerevan [Video]

Have you ever wondered what success is made of? Ani Aprahamian has discovered the formula for herself. She believes that whether it’s the next science initiative or just another step in your life journey, determination to realize what you set out to do is the best way to achieving success. Ani Aprahamian is the Director of the A. Alikhanyan National Laboratory of Armenia and Frank M. Freimann Chair Professor of Physics at the University of Notre Dame. Ani joined the faculty of the Physics Department and the Nuclear Science Laboratory at the University of Notre Dame in 1989. Between 2006 and 2008 she was the Program Director for Nuclear Physics and Particle & Nuclear Astrophysics at the US National Science Foundation. Ani was elected a foreign member of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia in 2008. In June of 2019, Ani and her team at the AANL started nuclear medicine in Armenia by the operation of an 18 MeV cyclotron for the production of radioactive isotopes. In 2020, the AANL team developed ozone generators for the sterilization of large spaces from the covid. She has realized the installation of a new cryogenic facility in Armenia with funds from the Armenian American Medical Society to meet the demand for Oxygen during the pandemic and for future science use. Graduating from a high school around 15 minutes outside of Boston, she spent lots of her childhood within the city and has seen Boston grow and change over time. Avoiding Social Comparison through DCE Method | Devina Faustanisa Nursyah Wibowo | TEDxBU [Video]

She is currently studying at the MET College of Boston University under a fully-funded scholarship from Indonesia’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology. She developed a hugeinterest in positive psychology and is hoping to conduct further research in the area for her final thesis presentation. During her spare time, she loves to play sports, do journaling, and read self-development books. Her life motto is just as simple as to dream, believe and achieve.
